About USST

The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology originated from the University of Shanghai, founded in 1907, and the German Medical and Engineering School, founded in 1906. These two educational institutions were then incorporated and renamed the East China University of Technology and Shanghai Advanced College of Mechanical Technology, respectively, in the early 50s in the 20th century. In 1996, the East China University of Technology and Shanghai Advanced College of Mechanical Technology merged and formed the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. More than 100,000 excellent academic elites, professionals, and social leaders were trained and graduated from the university during the last century. With its prestigious history of education, it earned the title of "Whampoa Military Academy in manufacturing industry" in China.

USST is now a municipal multidisciplinary key applied research-oriented university. It focuses on engineering while science, economics, management, literature, law, art, and other disciplines jointly well develop. USST has become a pilot unit to construct "a high-level local institution of higher education" in Shanghai since 2018. In the same year, USST Business school officially passed the AACSB international certification, marking USST as the first university in the non-Ministry of Education to pass the AACSB international certification.

USST has become a backbone university in equipment manufacture, medical equipment, and the publishing and printing industries. It currently has 60 undergraduate programs, eight first-class discipline doctoral programs, six centers for post-doctoral studies, 27 first-class master’s degree programs, and 18 professional master’s degree programs. Power Engineering, Engineering Thermophysics, Optical Engineering, Management Science, and Engineering have long held the leading position in China. The three disciplines, Engineering, Materials Science, and Chemistry, have long ranked the top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) globally.

USST is one of the earliest institutions of higher education in mainland China to initiate international cooperative programs that has already had almost 1,000 international students, has established partnerships with over 170 institutions of higher education in more than 30 countries and regions, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Ireland.

About On-campus Classes

IEP Fall 2024 on-campus classes will be on USST Fuxing Road Campus in Shanghai, which is one of the first-tier cities in China. As the main one among the coastal cities, Shanghai has long been a central hub of communications, transportation, and international exchange. Students will be studying with passionate and knowledgeable academics provided by USST and enjoying the great culture of Shanghai.
